Archival Storage for Northampton County
Northampton County is one of the most economically important counties in eastern Pennsylvania. The archive for the 250-year-old county serves as the central repository for historical and current records.
In 2004, the county’s need for additional space made it necessary to outsource the archival contents to an off-site commercial records center. However, these files were not easily accessible, causing delays in document retrieval.
By 2012, the county had paid more than $1 million in storage costs to the off-site archive. It then became clear that restoring the county archives would be the best and most cost-efficient option.
Therefore, Northampton County contacted their local Datum dealer to determine the feasibility of bringing their archive back in-house. The dealer assisted the county with finding a suitable building near the courthouse, designing a high- density storage system to both maximize space and accommodate growth as well as developing a plan for transferring the materials.
In order to make the most efficient of the chosen storage space, high-density MobileTrak5® systems with 4PostTM shelving were installed. The new systems provided a 47% increase in storage for the county’s archival boxes and a 25% increase in storage for docket books.
The new system keeps the stored materials organized and protects them from damage. The locking carriages provide security for sensitive documents and barcode tracking allows for random storage in the system, which fully utilizes the space the system occupies.
Overall, the county records are now easily accessed and the ability to maximize storage in a smaller facility will save Northampton County years of extraneous costs for off-site storage.
